Santiago Island is the largest island of Cape Verde islands, its most important agricultural centre. Santiago island has the most diverse flora and fauna of all Cape Verde: it has 1,915 identified land species, of which 289 are endemic. It is also the most forested island of Cape Verde: 38% of its area is forest. The only protected areas of the island are the Natural Parks of Serra do Pico de Antónia and Serra Malagueta, covering 3.68% of the island. 

It was the first of the islands to be settled: the town of Ribeira Grande (now Cidade Velha and a UNESCO World Heritage Site) was founded in 1462. Santiago island is home to the nation’s capital city of Praia.

The island that has it all, tropical beaches, a thriving city, stunning nature and perfect hiking trails. The main industries are agriculture, tourism, fishing and others, alongside some manufacturing. Main agricultural products are corn, sugarcane, banana, cand mangoes. Hiking in Santiago is a great experience. You can explore the island by yourself, or go on guided hiking tours and even climb the highest peak of the island, Pico d’Antonio, which is 4566 foot (1392 meters) high.

In the city of Praia, 3 km from the city, you will find the Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI), which receives daily flights from different parts of the world.

Ferry

You can reach the island by cruiseship at the harbor of Praia which is located 5 minutes away from the harbor.

Ferry connections between the islands are very poor and very insufficient for tourist trips.

Places to visit

Praia

Cape Verde is known for its relaxing vibe and quiet towns. However, the capital of the archipelago is something different. Praia is a busy city and walking around the city, located in south part of Santiago island in Cape Verde, you directly understand that this is the economic heart of the island.  Close to the city, you’ll find the beach Quebra Canela, which is a modern beach, with many restaurants and bars. Really a good place within the city to relax. 

 

Plateau

Plateau, the historic center of the city of Praia, is literally a plateau, from where you have a wide view of the city and especially the port of Praia. Plateau was built in the colonial era and its architect does not let this go unnoticed. You can’t go to plateau and not stop by the municipal market, an ideal place to discover the variety of products on the island. Every day you find several people there, mostly women, selling their products. Vegetables, fish, fruits and sweets are products that you will definitely find there.

Sucupira Market

The Sucupira market is a little different from the ordinary. It is the largest open-air market on Santiago island and in the entire Cape Verde. A place where you can find practically everything you need, clothes, shoes, accessories, food, etc. A market located in a central area of the city with typical African characteristics, full of colors and a little consequence of globalism you find people from different cultures and languages to sell or to buy in this space. Right next to the market is located the only bus station in the city which also increases a number of people traffic in this are

Cidade Velha

Santiago island was the first Cape Verdean island that was discovered in the 15th century by the Portuguese. They created the first settlement in Cape Verde and named the city Ribeira Grande. Later, during the 18th century, the name was changed to Cidade Velha. It was the first European settlement on a tropical African island. Great navigators like Vasco da Gama and Columbus used the island as a stopover during their journeys around the world. 

Now Cidade Velha is a Unesco World Heritage site, mainly because it was the first European settlement in the tropics, and was from significant value for the maritime trade routes between Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world. The island Santiago became a trade hub for slavery, because of its location on the trade routes. Luckily it belongs to the past nowadays. 

Serra Malagueta Natural Park

A mountain range on the island of Santiago, an integral part of the Serra Malaqueta natural park, which is home to several endemic species of flora and fauna of Santiago island. The mountain range is perfect for being in contact with nature and breathing fresh air, it has an incredible view, with great trails for hiking. Serra Malagueta is the best spot for trekkings and hikes, from easy to challenging possibilities.

Tarrafal of Santiago

Tarrafal is a city in the northern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. arround 20.000 people live here, It is a fishing port situated on the northwestern coast. It constitutes the seat of the Tarrafal Municipality. 

Its name derives from its location in a coastal area which allows the presence of a plant called tarrafe, today the village of Tarrafal is one of the mandatory stops in the visit to the island of Santiago due to its calm and its white sand beach that is an attraction for its residents and visitors, due to its location in the coastal area, it makes it impossible the existance of green areas and the practice of agriculture, in other hand fishing and tourism are the income-generating activities, its sea rich in varieties of fish attracts lovers of snorkeling and fishing.

Assomada Market

Assomada is a town in the interior of Santiago, 44 km north of the city of Praia. it is a city on a plateau between the mountains, that is, a city in the middle of the countryside, which makes it quite peculiar. The climate there is quite pleasant. There you can visit the market, one of the best on the island, where you can find various national products. Twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays the city turns into a real market full of color, the main roads turn into a trade of clothing, furniture, electrodomestic, and other local products, people from all over the island gather in this city to buy and sell products, and this becomes an attraction for visitors.

Weather

Santiago has a hot desert climate in coastal areas and located by the sea as Praia and Cidade velha, and the temperature changes as you go up in altitude to the north side along there is a  semi-arid climate. The average annual temperature on the coast is about 30 °C (73 °F). In summer, between August and October, the temperature rises and it is very hot, causing precipitation and rainfall throughout the island.

Very often you will find clouds descending in the zones of the natural park area of Serra Malagueta up to 800 m of altitude providing a colder and humid climate which favors the local flora. The major climate risk, similarly to other Cape Verdean islands, yet much less pronounced in the higher altitudes due to better ability in gaining moisture from clouds, is drought.

Where to eat

On the island there are different restaurants and kiosks that offer food for travellers, in all reataurants in the city you will find food with a similar standard to what is served in Europe, fish and meat dishes and beans are the most prepared, for vegetarians or have a special diet, you can order a special dish in advance or buy it in a nearby supermarket.

Tips: Avoid uncooked foods or vegetables with peel.
Cook it, peel it, boil it or Forget it.

Don’t use household water for consumption or to brush your teeth, you will find a 1 and a half liter bottle of water for a price of 1 and a half euros in any supermarket

Payments

  • You will need to pay your overnight stay fee which is 2 and a half euros a day for adults over 12 years old.
  • In supermarkets it is always better to pay cash or small money.
  • It is almost always difficult to find change if you have big notes.
    Credit cards are almost not accepted, only in big hotels.
    In cities you will find ATMs with available cash up to 200 euros per day.

Beach

The island of Santiago does not offer beach tourism but even so it is possible to find some beaches with good conditions for swimming and snorkeling, the best known among them is Tarrafal beach and still in the city of Praia still in the coastal areas of Prainha and Quebra Cinnamon it is possible to swim in smaller beaches but with lifeguards and surveillance during the day.

Hikes in Santiago

Baobab Hike

This is without a doubt one of the tours that cannot be missed, a short 2-hour hike in the Ribeira Grande de Santiago valley, the place where the experimental laboratory that launched the first European city south of the Sahara is located.

Despite a hot and dry climate, this valley still preserves the first plants introduced in the archipelago, you will also get to know about the production of Grogue (Rum), which is the national drink of Cape Verde.

Gomgom Hike

Serra de Malagueta Natural Park is located almost 50 km from the capital Praia, at an initial altitude of 800 m and has its highest point at 1064 m, it is considered a protected area due to the wide variety of animals and plants that are found there. It is currently the most loved spot by nature lovers for sports and leisure activities.

Come with us on a relaxing walk to get in touch with nature and to learn about the flora and fauna of the Santiago.

This complete tour requires good physical preparation and with some sloped areas and with some difficulties, but sure one of the best hiking of Santiago with magnificent views from the top.

From Praia you will drive around 50 km to natural park of Serra Malagueta, at the end we will take you back to your accommodation trough the east coast.

Principal Hike

This is without a doubt one of the tours that cannot be missed, a short 2-hour hike in the Ribeira Grande de Santiago valley, the place where the experimental laboratory that launched the first European city south of the Sahara is located.

Despite a hot and dry climate, this valley still preserves the first plants introduced in the archipelago, you will also get to know about the production of Grogue (Rum), which is the national drink of Cape Verde.

From Praia you will drive 15 km to Ribeira Grande, after Visiting all the monuments in Cidade Velha, we will take you back to your accommodation.

Distance: 4 km / + 20 m / – 500 m  / moderate

Hike Rui Vaz

This soft hike brings you from one valley to the other. While passing by many mango trees and small villages, you will see the typical Cape Verdean life, far away from many tourists.  

Distance: 5 km/10 m up/402 m down

Hike Monte Txota

This is a perfect hike in the Monte Txota Natural Park, the largest forest perimeter on the island of Santiago and with the largest number of endemic plants on the island due to its distance from the housing areas, with breathtaking landscapes and a variety of trees and endemics plants, thus being a walk of great interest for tourists and visitors.

Come and enjoy the silence and tranquility of this area and its people.

Hike Banana Plantation

This is an unforgettable experience in the north side of Santiago Island by walking inside the biggest Banana plantation of this fantastic island, with your guide you will taste and see on spot how is the daily-life of the farmers here and understand the national technics of irrigation of sugar cane, crops, coconuts among others.

Hike Alto Mira

This is a perfect hike for those who love the landscapes full of vulcanic formation or to see the results of the various eruptions over time that originated in bizarre formations of basalt rocks and deep canioons of unique beauty.

Starting in Alto Mira ,passing by Forquinha to contemplate a magnificent view of Alto Mira and Ribeira das Patas. Descent towards Ribeira das Patas to appreciate the daily life of the locals and their way of working the land. A different hike where lush vegetation gives way to black earth of volcanic origin.
